Roche's hopes of a further rebound for Vabysmo in the US were dashed on Thursday after the company reported that sales of the eye-disease treatment slipped 2% in the second quarter on a constant exchange rate (CER) basis to CHF 681 million ($836 million) amid a continued contraction of the country's branded market. Sales of Vabysmo began to fall in the third quarter of 2025, a trend that continued into the final three months of last year. However, Roche suggested at the time that it expected a recovery for the drug in the US market in 2026, with Teresa Graham, CEO of the drugmaker's pharmaceuticals division, forecasting "a re-acceleration of growth."This prediction played out, with sales of Vabysmo climbing 4% on a CER basis in the first quarter of 2026, although the recovery now appears to have stalled. Overall sales of Vabysmo in the first half of the year were flat at CHF 2.1 billion.Elsewhere, Roche is betting on new medicines to help offset declining revenues from the impact of biosimilar competition, although this is now expected to hit sales by about CHF 600 million this year, down from an earlier estimate of CHF 1 billion. One such hope is the oral selective oestrogen receptor degrader (SERD) giredestrant, which Citi analysts predict could generate peak annual sales of $14.5 billion.Giredestrant, in combination with everolimus, is under review by the FDA to treat adults with ER-positive, HER2-negative, ESR1-mutated locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer following recurrence or progression on a prior endocrine-based regimen.
