Tanta University is a prominent educational institution located in Tanta, Egypt. It operates under the guidance of the Ministry of Higher Education and was initially established as a branch of the University of Alexandria in 1962, offering only a medical faculty. The university later gained independence in 1972 and was renamed the University of the Middle Delta, expanding its offerings to include faculties of science, agriculture, and education. In 1973, the institution was renamed Tanta University and has since become a renowned center for education and research in Egypt.

Dantrolene in Statin-induced Myopathy

Statins are one of the most efficient drugs for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia which is considered as one of the main risk factors for atherosclerosis., and therefore they are frequently prescribed medications [1-2]. However, statins therapy is associated with myotoxicity. This effect of different severity ranges forms myopathy, myalgia, myositis, and rhabdomyolysis [3].
Different studies set a number of hypotheses to explain the pathophysiological events of statin-induced myopathy. These hypotheses include disturbance of mitochondrial function resulting in cytoplasmic Ca2+ overload as well as decreased level of the potent antioxidant and membrane stabilizer coenzyme Q10/ubiquinone [4-5] This study tries to introduce a complementary therapy that targets these molecular events. This therapeutic protocol includes dantrolene the muscle relaxant that acts as a ryanodine receptor (RYR) antagonist and thus decreases Ca release in cytoplasm.

This randomized, clinical trial evaluates the efficacy of oral versus sublingual vitamin B12 supplementation in correcting early-onset vitamin B12 deficiency in adult patients using proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Harnessing methane for improved nitrogen removal in membrane aerated biofilm reactors: towards sustainable wastewater practices

This review examines the role of methane as an electron donor in Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) systems, which conventionally use gas-permeable membranes to deliver oxygen directly to stratified biofilms for wastewater treatment. The integration of methane provides a sustainable carbon source for denitrification while also mitigating methane emissions. Methanotrophic denitrification enables methanotrophs to couple methane oxidation with nitrate or nitrite reduction, linking nitrogen removal with greenhouse gas mitigation. This dual function improves treatment efficiency, reduces energy use and operational costs, and addresses drawbacks of conventional MABRs, such as limited denitrification in low-carbon wastewater, by supplying a cost-effective carbon source. Methane-based MABRs, however, introduce challenges including methane-oxygen balance, microbial dynamics, and safety. Recent solutions include Layer-Structured Membranes (LSMs) and artificial intelligence-driven control, which improve biofilm stability, optimize gas transfer, and ensure long-term performance. Collectively, these advances underscore methane-based MABRs as a promising technology for sustainable and low-carbon wastewater treatment.

Transcatheter versus surgical treatment in aortic stenosis with coronary artery disease: A meta-analysis of time-to-event data on 162,305 patients

BACKGROUND:

Severe aortic stenosis (AS) often coexists with coronary artery disease (CAD), present in about 50 % of patients undergoing valve intervention. Surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) with coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) has been the traditional standard, providing revascularization and durability, whereas transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) offers a less invasive option. PCI + TAVR may lower perioperative risk, but SAVR + CABG may confer superior survival, with conflicting evidence.

OBJECTIVES:

This meta-analysis of time-to-event data aimed to compare PCI + TAVR with CABG + SAVR in patients with concomitant AS and CAD.

METHODS:

We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases up to March 2025. Individual patient data (IPD) were reconstructed from published Kaplan-Meier curves to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause mortality. Dichotomous outcomes were analyzed using risk ratios (RR) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI).

RESULTS:

Fifteen studies including 162,305 patients were analyzed. PCI + TAVR was associated with higher all-cause mortality at 48 months (HR 1.29, 95 % CI 1.23-1.35, p < 0.001), but lower in-hospital acute kidney injury (RR 0.37, 95 % CI 0.21-0.66, p = 0.0007), short-term (≤30 days) major adverse cardiovascular events (RR 0.67, 95 % CI 0.50-0.91, p = 0.0093), and new-onset atrial fibrillation (RR 0.23, 95 % CI 0.17-0.32, p < 0.0001). Conversely, long-term (>30 days) myocardial infarction risk was higher (RR 1.61, 95 % CI 1.08-2.39, p = 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS:

PCI+TAVR was associated with higher mortality or adverse event rates compared to CABG+SAVR, but lower perioperative complications. High-quality randomized trials are warranted to confirm these findings.

Harnessing benzofuran scaffolds: A journey through design, synthesis, and biological discovery toward safer anti-diabetic and anti-oxidant candidates

A series of benzofuran-based compounds 7a-e, 8a-e, 13a-c, and 17a-e was designed and synthesized through bioisosteric strategies inspired by previously reported studies. These compounds were initially screened for anti-oxidant properties using the DPPH radical scavenging assay, where compounds 8c, 8d, 8e, 13c, and 17d demonstrated outstanding activity, with IC₅₀ values ranging between 13.48 and 21.73 μM. Subsequent enzymatic assays demonstrated that compounds 7d, 8d, 17c, and 17e exhibited α-amylase inhibitory activity comparable to the reference drug acarbose (IC₅₀ = 12.35-24.59 μM). In parallel, compounds 7e, 8e, and 17c showed potent α-glucosidase inhibition, with IC₅₀ values ranging from 7.30 to 15.24 μM, which are comparable to or surpass the activity of acarbose (IC₅₀ = 11.29 ± 0.10 μM), supporting their potential as anti-diabetic agents. Building upon these in vitro findings, selected candidates were evaluated in vivo using glucose intolerance and alloxan-induced diabetic models, where they significantly lowered blood glucose levels compared to standard treatments. Complementary bioinformatics studies confirmed the engagement of key anti-diabetic molecular targets. Safety was assessed via toxicity biomarkers (AST, ALT, creatinine, and urea), all of which remained within normal ranges, indicating a favorable toxicity profile. ADME analyses suggested good oral bioavailability and low risk of systemic toxicity. Additionally, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated strong binding affinities and structural alignment with co-crystallized ligands. These findings collectively establish the benzofuran scaffold as a promising platform for developing novel anti-oxidant and anti-diabetic therapeutics.

The 2023 first place image showcases a debilitating and prevalent complication of diabetes MELVILLE, N.Y., Oct. 17, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Nikon Instruments Inc. today unveiled the winners of the 49th annual Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition. This year's first place prize was awarded to Hassanain Qambari, assisted by Jayden Dickson of the Lions Eye Institute, for his vivid image of a rodent optic nerve head showing astrocytes (yellow), contractile proteins (red), and retinal vasculature (green). The damaged blood vessels can swell and leak, which can cause blurry vision or total loss of eyesight. Since 2021, Qambari has devoted his time and research to the early detection and reversal of the disease. "Current diagnostic criteria and treatment regimens for diabetic retinopathy are limited to the late-stage appearance of the disease, with irreversible damage to retinal microvasculature and function," said Qambari. "The visual system is a complex and highly specialized organ, with even relatively minor perturbations to the retinal circulation able to cause devastating vision loss. I entered the competition as a way to showcase the complexity of retinal microcirculation." Qambari faced some challenges when capturing his image such as locating fine vessels near 110 microns in diameter and establishing a protocol for labeling different cell types. "Over the past 20 years, our research group has refined the technique of isolated ocular perfusion labeling for fine vessels in the eye," said Qambari. "While the ophthalmic artery in the rodent model presented a technically demanding challenge, we were able to overcome it with persistence and patience." The final result educates the public about the universal condition affecting millions and the vital research necessary to further advance care. "The Nikon Small World competition is great, as it showcases amazing work across many disciplines from around the world," said Qambari. "All the images presented in the competition represent the beauty and artistic side of science which may otherwise get overlooked. Such a competition not only celebrates the participant's hard work and passion but may also draw and inspire young scientists to pursue a career in STEM. It certainly inspired me." Researchers Harness the Power of Masimo Root®’s Advanced Multimodal Monitoring Capabilities to Study the Impact of Different Ventilatory Strategies on Brain Oxygenation During Thoracoscopic Surgery

Simultaneous Use of Masimo O3® Regional Oximetry, NomoLine® Capnography, SedLine® Brain Function Monitoring, and rainbow® Pulse CO-Oximetry Helped Clinicians Determine that Maintaining Higher End-tidal Carbon Dioxide (EtCO2) Improved Cerebral Oxygenation, Leading to Improved Outcomes NEUCHATEL, Switzerland--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Masimo (NASDAQ: MASI) today announced the findings of a prospective, single-blinded, randomized controlled study published in the Journal of Anesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine in which Dr. Mona Mohamed Mogahed and colleagues at Tanta University in Tanta, Egypt and The King Fahd General Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, sought to evaluate the impact of varying ventilation strategies on the cerebral oxygenation of patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). To monitor the variety of physiological parameters needed to undertake such an evaluation, they turned to the multi-modal Masimo Root® patient monitoring and connectivity platform, which is designed to allow clinicians to streamline their ability to keep track of numerous modalities, simultaneously, using a single, intuitive monitor. The technologies involved included O3® regional oximetry, capnography with NomoLine® sampling lines, SedLine® brain function monitoring, and multiple rainbow® Pulse CO-Oximetry measurements. Using Root and Masimo monitoring technologies, the researchers were able to determine that maintaining higher end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO2) improved baseline regional cerebral oxygenation (rSO2), with impacts on early postoperative cognitive function that included improvements in Aldrete scores and mini mental status exam (MMSE) scores.1 This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: Masimo Root® (Graphic: Business Wire) Noting the increased risk of hypoxemia during one-lung ventilation (OLV) as part of VATS, which can lead to postoperative neurocognitive dysfunctions, the authors hypothesized that increasing EtCO2 could be a “convenient and powerful” way to manage cerebral desaturation during the surgery. They enrolled 70 patients, ages 18-65, undergoing elective VATS requiring OLV, between September 2021 and September 2022 at The King Fahd General Hospital, Jeddah. All patients were operated on by the same surgical team. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: in the first, EtCO2 was maintained at 32-38 mmHg (group I) and in the second, at 39-45 mmHg (group II). During the procedure, monitored parameters included oxygen saturation (Masimo SET® SpO2), heart rate (HR), and noninvasive hemoglobin (Masimo SpHb®) via an RD rainbow SET® fingertip sensor; EtCO2 via capnometer and NomoLine sampling line; noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP), body temperature, and rSO2 via O3 near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) sensors monitoring both brain hemispheres; and Masimo Patient State Index (PSi™), a processed EEG parameter used to help clinicians maintain appropriate sedation, via SedLine. Outcomes included Aldrete scores and MMSE scores assessed at 3 and 24 hours after surgery. The researchers found that the percentage of change in rSO2 differed significantly between groups (p < 0.05), on both sides of the brain, with the higher values, over time, in Group II, in direct relation with the higher EtCO2 maintained in that group. In the right hemisphere, the difference became significant at the fourth time interval [T4] at which rSO2 was recorded, p = 0.0012, and maintained significance for the remainder of surgery [T4-T13], p < 0.001. In the left hemisphere, the difference became significant at T2, p = 0.09, and remained significant [T3-13], p < 0.001. Aldrete scores were significantly higher in Group II upon arrival at the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) (p = 0.013) and 15 minutes after arrival (p = 0.03), then became comparable. MMSE scores were significantly higher in Group II 3 hours after surgery (p = 0.0009), but not at 24 hours after surgery.
